Marula Oil: Everything You Need to Know

Where does Marula Oil come from? Marula Oil comes from the nut of the Marula Tree.   Its botanical name is Sclerocarya birrea and it grows primarily in the woodland areas of South Africa.  Over the centuries the tree has been regarded with great reverence because every part of the tree has benefits for our health and wellbeing. The tree is related to the Mango, Cashew and Pistachio Trees and has played a vital and important role in African culture for over 10,000 years.

What is Organic Marula Oil?

Marula oil is a cold expeller pressed from the nut and has a wide array of healing benefits for skin and hair. How to use Marula oil for the face? Its benefits include skin cell rejuvenation, adding vibrancy and glow to the skin while diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and soothing away the bumps of stretch marks.  It also has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant, protecting the skin from environmental stressors, like pollution and UV rays.  It’s also reported to help the skin refortify itself, strengthening the skin barrier and enhancing the skin’s firmness and elasticity.

And for the hair, it has been known to improve the health and well-being of the scalp so that the hair appears thicker and shinier while protecting and fortifying the hair from environmental damage.

Where does the oil come from?

Marula Oil is a cold expeller pressed from the kernel of the Marula fruit.  The fruit is small and green, turns yellow when ripe, and falls to the ground. The fruits are collected by hand off the ground, between January and March.  The pulp of the tree is extremely high in vitamin C and can be used in a wide variety of recipes ranging from savory to sweet, while the peel of the fruit has dozens of different components that offer benefits that are also wide-ranging.  Inside the pulp is the nut, which when cracked open reveals the inner kernel that yields the precious oil.

What makes Organic Marula Oil so special?

The oil is very high in Oleic Acid, making it an extremely stable oil with powerful antioxidant benefits. That means the oil has the remarkable capacity to strengthen the skin barrier function so that the skin keeps hydrated and doesn’t lose too much water.  Plus, the rich presentation of Oleic Acid also keeps the skin pliable and supple, while not losing its firmness or shape. Its antioxidant properties also keep it fortified and protect the skin against external stressors like UV rays and pollutants which can quickly age and weaken the skin.

Here’s how to use it:

Organic Marula Oil can be used at full strength directly on the skin.  No need to dilute it down.  It feels softening and luxurious and absorbs quickly, leaving a light pillowy feeling. Of course, you can also blend it with Organic Jojoba Oil or Organic Argan Oil to increase its healing benefits and extend its soft luxurious feeling to the skin. A good ratio would be 1:1, meaning for every 1 TBSP of Organic Jojoba Oil you would mix it with 1 TBSP of Organic Marula Oil.
