Certified Aromatherapist Course FAQs: Everything You Want to Know Before You Enroll

If you’ve been using essential oils for years, experimenting with diffuser blends, making your own roller bottles, or helping friends with headaches, stress, or sleep issues—at some point, you probably wondered: Is there a way to learn more and do this professionally?

You’re not alone.

More and more people are asking how to become a certified aromatherapist. But with so many programs out there—and so many confusing details—it can be hard to know what’s legit, what’s worth the money, and what will actually teach you how to use essential oils safely, confidently, and effectively to help others.

So in this blog, let’s answer the most common questions people ask about becoming a certified aromatherapist. Whether you’re exploring this path out of passion, purpose, or a deeper calling to heal, this guide is for you.

Let’s dive into the top Certified Aromatherapist Course FAQs.

1. What is a certified aromatherapist?

A certified aromatherapist is someone who has completed a formal education program in the safe, effective, and holistic use of essential oils. This includes learning the science, history, chemistry, safety, and application methods of essential oils, as well as how to work with clients in a professional setting.

Once you complete a certification course that meets industry standards—like my Aromatherapy in Action program—you’re eligible to become a Level 1 or Level 2 professional aromatherapist.

2. What makes a course “certified”?

A certified aromatherapist course is one that follows curriculum standards approved by a professional organization—like NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy) or AIA (Alliance of International Aromatherapists). These organizations have outlined strict guidelines for what a legitimate program must teach.

My course, Aromatherapy in Action, meets and exceeds those global standards, so when you graduate, you’ll have a professional-level education and be recognized by leading aromatherapy associations.

3. How many hours of study are required?

This is one of the top Certified Aromatherapist Course FAQs, and the answer depends on the level.

  • Level 1 Certification: 50 hours minimum
  • Level 2 Certification: At least 200 hours total (including Level 1)

These hours include reading, video lessons, case studies, research assignments, and hands-on practice. In my program, the learning is flexible and self-paced—so you can study when it works for your life.

4. Do I need a background in health or science to enroll?

Not at all. Many of our students are massage therapists, nurses, or herbalists, but just as many are everyday women who have been drawn to essential oils as a natural alternative to conventional medicine.

You don’t need a science degree to succeed. You just need curiosity, passion, and the desire to help others live healthier, more conscious lives. We’ll guide you through the more technical parts like chemistry and anatomy, step by step, so you never feel overwhelmed.

5. What topics are covered in a certified aromatherapist course?

A comprehensive course like Aromatherapy in Action will cover:

  • The history and modern uses of essential oils
  • Profiles of at least 65 essential oils
  • Essential oil quality and sourcing
  • Extraction methods (like steam distillation and cold pressing)
  • Basic botany and plant taxonomy
  • Introductory organic aromatic phyto-chemistry
  • Blending techniques and methodolgies
  • Carrier oils, and additional base ingredients and raw materials along with how to prepare and dilute essential oils into them.
  • Application methods (topical, inhalation, etc.)
  • Safety guidelines and contraindications
  • Client consultation and case study practice
  • Research paper writing
  • Business basics for launching your practice
  • Legal and ethical considerations

Everything is designed to give you a well-rounded education that prepares you for both personal use and professional practice.

6. What’s the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 certification?

Level 1 is a foundational course—it gives you the basics of aromatherapy and is a great starting point if you’re new to formal training. You learn about 24 essential oils, basic blending methodologies, and how to work with clients.

Level 2 takes it deeper. You’ll study more oils, dive deeper into aromatic phytochemistry and physiology and do more case studies, write a research paper, and complete more hours. This level is often required for professional liability insurance and allows you to work more confidently with clients.

In Aromatherapy in Action, you can choose to do Level 1 only—or continue straight through to Level 2. Many students do both because they want the full experience and credentials. Both levels make you eligible for professional memenership in the professional aromatherapy associations.

Coaching for Aromatherapy Course

7. How long does it take to complete a certified aromatherapist course?

Most students complete Aromatherapy in Action in 3–12 months, depending on how much time they can commit weekly. Since it’s self-paced, you can work around your job, family, or other commitments.

We give you lifetime access to the course materials, so there’s no pressure—and you can come back to review at any time.

8. Do I need to buy a lot of oils or supplies?

No. You’ll need a core set of essential oils (around 20–30) and some basic carrier oils and bottles. We provide guidance on which oils to buy and where to find high-quality products. You don’t need to spend a fortune or have a huge kit.

In fact, we’ll teach you how to evaluate oil quality so you can avoid wasting money on poor-quality or overpriced brands.

9. Will I be able to work with clients after I finish the course?

Yes. Once you finish your coursework and assignments (including case studies and a final exam), you’ll receive your certificate. From there, you can begin working with clients privately, start your own aromatherapy practice, or add these skills to an existing business (like massage, yoga, or herbalism).

Many of our graduates also go on to teach workshops, write books, or develop their own product lines.

10. How do I know this course is right for me?

If you feel called to help others… if you’ve been using essential oils but want to understand them on a deeper level… if you’ve been frustrated by the misinformation online and want real training from a trusted source—you’re in the right place.
